HiFest will have a dedicated seminar room that will host a number of talks, panels, Q&A’s and screenings with some of the industry’s leading practitioners. Talks are free to attend, for all ticket holders.

SATURDAY 3RD DECEMBER


‘WHAT A WONDERFUL MESS’ (11AM)

Screening / Curated by Silas Money.

A special screening of a selection of animated shorts that flirt with absurdist narratives. These rough and ready films aim to be a humorous alternative to the gloss of the conventional. Curated by Silas Money.


‘ILLUSTUBERS’ (1PM)

Panel: Ali Graham (Chair), Fran Meneses & Holly Exley

A conversation with top illustrators Fran Meneses (aka Frannerd) and Holly Exley about the power of YouTube and vlogging and how it has affected their careers.


‘JIM STOTEN’ (2.30PM)

Illustrator Jim Stoten runs through his entire career from drawing in the bath as a student, to creating children’s books as a 36 year old person, passing a set of breakthroughs about what not to do, along the way.


‘GIRLS THAT DRAW’ (4PM)

After the massive success of last year’s panel, Liv Siddall once again leads an intriguing, insightful and inspiring discussion with a select group of top, professional female illustrators.

Award-winning filmmaker Chris Shepherd presents a retrospective of his animation work, including short films, pop promos and an exclusive South Coast premiere of his new short film, Johnno’s Dead.

A selection of animations created in collaboration with The School Of Life – a world renowned forum for pragmatic philosophy and lifestyle self-realisation. See how life’s big questions can be explained through illustration.


‘LEARNING THROUGH ILLUSTRATION’ (1PM)

Panel: Ben Newman (Chair), Owen Davey, Eleanor Taylor & Nicholas Stevenson

This prolific group of artists discuss the very important role illustration plays when attempting to teach complex subjects such as science, history and nature. They will explore the balance between cold hard facts and expressive illustration.


‘BEN NEWMAN’ (2.30PM)

Is progress the gradual, upward incline towards utter brilliance? Is a mistake, a mistake or just the scenic route? Is originality still possible or is it just a myth? What did you want to be when you were 5? Countless questions possibly answered …

Ben will have a selection of books available (including his new book BOO!) which he will be selling and signing after the talk.
